Pasco County is a located on the Gulf coast in central Florida. Its 2020 population was 561.89K. Pasco’s county seat is Dade City and its largest city is New Port Richey. Other cities include Wesley Chapel, Zephyrhills, Land O’ Lakes, and Odessa. Pasco, together with Hernando, Hillsborough, and Pinellas counties comprise the Tampa-St.Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area, and along with various combinations of Manatee and Sarasota counties further south, Citrus County to the north, and Polk County to the east is often referred to as the Tampa Bay Area. As of 2005, Pasco was the 38th fastest-growing county in the country. Tourism has remained a strong industrial component of Pasco County, with scores of vacationers flocking to its golden beaches.
The area surrounding Tampa Bay was first discovered thirty-six years after the arrival of Columbus by Panfilo de Narvaez, who landed on the beaches of Old Tampa Bay before trekking across what is now Pasco County. By the 19th Century, the area had come under American control and began construction on a series of prominent military forts, which also posed the added benefit of allowing improved roads and infrastructure. In 1845, Florida became the twenty-second state in the Union, and formal government institutions begin to surface in the area.
Pasco County was formally organized in 1887 from the portion of southern Hernando County, and sponsors subsequently named the beautiful Floridian suburb after recently elected United States Senator Samuel Pasco. By the roaring 20’s, Florida experienced a land boom that saw the Sunshine State become the winter home of many influential and prominent industrial capitalists and even entertainment stars. Pasco’s population has climbed steadily since the 1960’s, first along the Gulf Coast, and later according to urbanizing trends around the metropolis of Tampa.
The area is known for incredible boating, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and snorkeling, as well as extensive networks of winding trails exposing its exotic wildlife and forestry. Several public areas, such as Starkey Wilderness Park in New Port Richey and Crews Lake Wilderness Park in Shady Hills, offer opportunities to spend time outdoors on pristine campgrounds or cabin style dwellings.
Athletics are supported by state-of-the-art facilities such as the J. Ben Harrill Recreation Center and similar facilities in Land O Lakes and Odessa. These meticulously maintained complexes feature athletic fields, tennis and basketball courts, weight rooms, and public swim access.
Nature enthusiasts flock to the area from around the nation to catch a glimpse of the abundant natural residents of the area including birds of prey, foxes, tortoises, squirrels, snakes, lizards, and more. Parks such as the James E. Grey Nature Preserve, the Anclote Gulf and River Parks, Eagle Point Park, Moon Lake Park, and the Crews Lake Wilderness Park offer winding trails, boat launches, playgrounds, and picnic spots for nature lovers.
The area also actively participates with community members to preserve and promote the rich history and deep cultural significance of local leaders from the past through numerous memorial and historic public parks such as the John S. Burks Memorial Park, Arthur Engle Memorial Park, and Veteran’s Park. The sunny area naturally hosts many fun festivals throughout the year, including the Suncoast Arts Festival, the Wesley Chapel Fall Festival, the Pasco County Fair, the Chasco Fiesta.
