Overview

Clearwater, Florida, is a city with a population of about 115,933 just to the west of Tampa Bay. Together with Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg, Clearwater is part of the largest metropolitan area along Florida’s Gulf Coast. It is also the County Seat of Pinellas County. The city’s name derives from the quality of the water emanating from the freshwater spring that once flowed from where Clearwater City Hall is now situated.

History

Fort Harrison was built in the mid-1830s up on a bluff overlooking the community’s harbor. It became an important military post during the period of the Seminole wars. An underground ammunition bunker related to the fort was discovered in 1962 by a resident merely planting a tree in his back yard. Clearwater was repeatedly raided by Union troops during the Civil War to get important supplies. The community was home to a major training facility for troops headed to both Europe and the Pacific in World War II.

Parks And Recreation

Moccasin Lake Nature Park is a 50-acre facility that includes environmental programs in its educational center. Sand Key County Park, just south of Clearwater, offers residents an unbeatable combination of soft, powdery beaches and gently flowing surf. Clearwater’s Coachman Park is a vibrant center for entertainment throughout the year at a venue that overlooks the water. It hosts the Jazz Festival and the Sea Blues Festival.

Attractions and Events

The “Cleveland Street District” in Clearwater is a more recent development in a renovated section of the downtown area. It is an urban experience featuring alfresco shopping and dining offering a myriad of food offerings from tacos to fresh seafood and more. Those that purchase Clearwater real estate can enjoy the vibrant nightlife amidst trendy night clubs and restaurants. The city purchased and subsequently renovated the historic Capitol Theater in 2009. Senator John Taylor first constructed the theater in 1921. The vaudeville acts of Fred Stone and Sally Rand performed here in the 1930s. The Philadelphia Phillies come to spring training at Lighthouse Field. The ball park is home to the Clearwater Thrashers as well.
